In Vitro Fertilization is the most effective fertility treatment available today. It involves a multi-week process in which eggs are removed from a female's ovaries, fertilized with sperm in a petri dish, grown inside a lab for several days (usually 3-5), then transferring into the female's uterus to develop for the remainder of gestation.
IVF is used in conjunction with a multitude of medication protocols to produce more and higher quality eggs, sperm, embryos, and a receptive uterine lining. It is used successfully for both medical and elective reasons.

A typical IVF cycle takes about 4-6 weeks from the start of medication to the pregnancy test. This includes 8-14 days of ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, 3-5 days of embryo development, and transfer, followed by a two-week wait for the pregnancy test.
Most patients experience minimal discomfort. The daily injections are given with small needles, and the egg retrieval is performed under sedation so you won't feel anything during the procedure. Some bloating and mild cramping after retrieval is normal and typically resolves within a few days.
